Where We Dive in Komodo

These are a sample of the diving areas we explore in Komodo. Please remember that our destinations are subject to weather conditions and the itinerary you select for your trip could change due to this.

  • West Komodo: Tatawa Besar, Tatawa Kecil & Siaba Besar, Batu Bolong
  • Northwest Komodo: Gili Lawa Laut (Crystal Rock, Castle Rock), Golden Passage, The Cauldron (Shotgun)
  • Southwest Komodo: Manta Alley South Komodo: Padar Wreck & Pillarsteen.

Getting to Komodo

The best way to get to Komodo is via Bali. A one-hour flight will take you to the cozy town of Labuan Bajo, where all our Komodo trips begin. The flight from Bali can be made in relative comfort with Garuda Indonesia or Batik Airlines. Cheaper alternatives are available with low-cost local airlines such as Lion Air or Air Asia (but beware, they often have delays!).

The Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the islands is during the dry season, which runs from April to December. The weather is usually sunny and nice during this time, perfect for exploring the islands and soaking up sun on the boat's top deck.

The busiest time for divers is July to August. To avoid crowds and get more of a dive site to yourself, plan your trip in June or September. These months are great for a dive Liveaboard trip. In general, the rainy season for Indonesia is from October to March. Avoiding those months is a good rule of thumb if you are expecting the best diving conditions in Komodo.

How Difficult is the Diving?

The water of the Komodo Islands are known to have strong and challenging currents, this is thanks to the Indonesian throughflow which runs directly through the area.

Though these currents are challenging, they are safe if dived correctly. It is all about getting into the right place at the right time. Some dive sites are known for needing more current are where you want to hit them to get the best fish packed action. For example:

  • Castle Rock
  • The Cauldron (a.k.a. Shotgun)
  • Karang Makasaar (Manta Point)

Trust us when we say that as long as you have the right experience, Komodo is going to be fun! The marine environment in the National Park is great for a drift dive, and the rich water will amaze you with its beautiful coral reefs. Just remember we need you to be an Open Water Diver with 40 logged dives, or an Advanced Open Water Diver with 20 logged dives so you can dive this area safely and everyone else on the boat can enjoy the trip too.

Other Activities to do

Besides the Liveaboard diving, Komodo has a lot to uncover. From enjoying the viewpoint of Padar Island to trekking with the famous Komodo Dragons, the area is never short of things to do. One of our favourites is watching the migration of 10’s of thousands of fruit bats from the top deck of the boat at sunset while enjoying a farewell party at the end of the trip.

Indonesia is very much dependent on tourism, and  the government continues to invest heavily not just in safety, but in logistics, ensuring that trips go as smoothly as they possibly can.

Due to the vessel’s location on the equator, it would be sensible to bring a hat, some longer sleeved/legged clothes to protect your arms and legs from the sun, and a decent pair of sun glasses. At night however, the temperatures can drop somewhat, so we advise maybe a warm-ish jumper if you intend on spending much time on deck stargazing.

Onboard it is safest to go barefoot as our decking can often get wet, and the anti-slip treatments we use are significantly more effective against bare skin. It is also advisable to bring some sturdy footwear for the light / mild treks that we go on. A thin raincoat would also be advisable, or you can just live in your wetsuit 24/7!!!
