Batu Rufus dive site is located on the west side of Rufus island in the Penemu chain in Raja Ampat. Batu Rufus means Rufus Rock, the name coming from the large limestone formation that extends out to the fringing coral reef that forms the dive site.
Visibility here is typically around 20 meters and currents are mild to medium, meaning this site can be tackled by less experienced divers as well as the more experienced and is also a great site for snorkelling as the lagoon is like a natural swimming pool.
As for the marine life at Batu Rufus, we have seen damselfish, chromis, schools of fusiliers, mackerels, napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, bluefin travelly, triggerfish, pufferfish and a number of macro subjects such as pygmy seahorse, seaworms and nudibranchs. Take note of the giant sponge barrels on the steep walls too, they make for a great photo.
This site has an incredible entry point. Down on the south west tip of the island is a beautiful little sheltered lagoon that has amazing sparkling blue water and a thriving hard coral garden in the shallows.
Also, after entering here there is a small shallow swim through surrounded by healthy sea fans at 5 meters that you will travers to get to the deeper steep wall below.
This site is best dived on a rising tide, when the current sweeps up the island from south to north. We will drop in at the lagoon entry point and make our way into the swim through.
From here we come to a sloping part of the reef and start to make our way down.
We will then keep the reef on our right-hand side and start heading north towards the first of the steep walls.
If there is enough current on the day this can be a nice leisurely drift dive, zero effort required to just glide on by and enjoy the beauty and majesty of the walls in all 3 dimensions.
Halfway through the dive the wall will turn back to a sloping reef, here we can start to raise our profile a little as we make our way to the next wall that tops out at 15 meters.
When we start to get towards the end of the dive we will ascend up to the shallows at 5 meters to enjoy the beautiful coral garden for our safety stop.
