Blue Magic

Blue Magic, One of the most famous and top rated dive sites in Raja Ampat, is located between the islands of Kri and Waigeo in the eastern Dampier Strait.

Overview

As you wonder into the Dampier Strait, the iconic diving area of Raja Ampat, one of the first sites you may encounter from Waisai is Blue Magic. One of the most famous and top rated dives in Raja Ampat, this site is located between the islands of Kri and Waigeo in the eastern Dampier Strait.

Known for Having a Large Number of Fish

This site is known for diving with large numbers of pelagic fish, it’s name reflecting the magic of the moment and the clear blue waters. The site is actually a submerged pinnacle reef with the top sitting around 7 meters depth and the bottom of the reef at 30 meters.

The Reason Why

So why is there so many pelagic fish in Blue Magic? Well one of the reasons is that this site is a cleaning station for many species, including everybody’s favourite ray, the Manta! That’s right, everybody loves (Manta) Ray, and there are several cleaning stations on this reef, one of which attracts Ray’s.

Both Reef Manta’s and Oceanic Manta’s can be found here. And what else can you see at this spot? The biodiversity is massive, you have a chance to see Jack Fish everywhere, Trigger Fish, schools of Sweetlips, Snapper, White Tip Reef Sharks, Black Tip Reef Sharks, Grey Reef Sharks, Dog-toothed Tuna, Wobbegong Sharks, Barracudas, Giant Trevally, Spanish Mackerel, Bump Head Parrot Fish, Butterfly Fish, Fusiliers, Groupers, Moray Eels, Surgeon Fish, Squirrel Fish and Soldier Fish.

Small stuff around the reef includes Porcelain Crabs, Peacock Mantis Shrimp, Flatworms, Nudibranchs, Octopus, Pygmy Seahorses and Scorpion Fish.

The Visibility

Visibility on this site is normally pretty good and within the 15 to 30 meter range.

The Diving

We drop into this dive with a positive buoyancy backroll. Once in the water we head down to the top of the reef at 8 meters, then continue down the slope of the reef to about 25 meters.

Depending on the direction of the current, we may either drop into the east side or west side of the reef, but we always drop into the Lee side.

From here we explore the reef up to the northern end. Current permitting, we will circle around to explore the opposite side of the reef. When the current is too strong, we switch back and start to raise our profile to start a zig zag dive up the reef face.

Regardless of the way we dive this site, we always want to save about 15 minutes at the end of the dive to explore the amazing plateau on the reefs top.

Here is where you can find a few big reef pinnacles and bommies that make ideal cleaning stations for fish and Manta’s alike.

As the light dances on these spaces, it creates the conditions for a photographer’s dream. Again, this all depends on the current, if it’s strong we may need to reef hook up here to see the show without struggle, on calmer days we can leisurely swim about the coral garden.

This is also where we will do our 5-meter safety stop at the end of the dive.
