Boo West

Boo West dive site does not get the recognition and fame of it’s eastern cousin site and Boo Windows,
but we think this is unfair as this is an amazing dive site.

Overview

Boo West dive site does not get the recognition and fame of it’s eastern cousin site and Boo Windows, but we think this is unfair as this is an amazing dive site.

The Topography

Located on the western tip of Boo island in Misool, Raja Ampat, this site has some great walls and slopes. What really makes this site stand out though is the impressive canyon that you swim across to get to the sub reef further out to the west.

The Visibility

Visibility here is generally great at 20 meters and currents vary from mild to medium but have occasionally pick up stronger so we advise intermediate to experienced divers for this site.

The Marine Life

Marine life here is also just as fishy as over at Boo Windows but without all the crowds of divers. We often see huge congregations of red tooth trigger fish, fusiliers, sweet lips, bat fish, anthias, Roundspot Surgeonfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, green sea turtles and black tip reef sharks.

There is also an abundance of macro life including various nudibranch species, orangutang crabs and pygmy seahorses.

The Diving

To dive the site we drop in on the north side of the last small island on the west end of the Boo chain.

We will pass the fringing reef at 5 meters and make our way down the wall to between 23 to 25 meters with the reef on our left-hand side.

We will continue exploring this wall till we come to the canyon leading out to the western sub reef. We will pass over the canyon and raise out profile up to around 20 meters to explore the other reef.

By keeping the reef on our left-hand side, we will fully circle the submerged pinnacles so that our return journey is actually heading east this time with the reef still on our left.

We will raise our profile again up to 12 meters here and see the canyon a second time from the perspective of looking down into the blue as we cross back over to the main reef.

Here we can finish up our dive in the shallows at 5 meters with our safety stop and a view of the beautiful hard coral garden below.
