Overview

Boo Windows, a magnificent dive site in the middle of Raja Ampat, is famous for its remarkable underwater topography and incredible marine biodiversity.

It’s known as a “window” site—offering large, dramatic windows and swim-throughs carved into the reef—that offers divers a unique experience.

The Visibility

If you’re looking for a spot with unbeatable visibility, this is it. The maximum depth at Boo Windows is around 30 meters (98 feet).

That said, don’t let the depth fool you; the shallow areas near the windows sit comfortably between 5-10 meters (16-33 feet), making this site diveable for both advanced and intermediate divers.

The Currents

This site tends to have a lot of current, which usually runs from east to west, so divers need to be ready for some drift diving.

However, the site is also perfect for checking out the delicate ecosystems that lie within the coral formations, both hard and soft.

The formations provide a plethora of nooks and crannies for a diversity of marine life and, as such, make up a seriously vibrant coral garden.

Yet, the site is not just known for being home to lots of reef fish. It is also a place where divers can spot bigger pelagic and even some open-ocean species.

The Marine Animals

The diverse macro marine species found at Boo Windows make it one of the best snorkelling and diving sites in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Large schools of fusiliers, sweetlips, and batfish are found here, making for spectacular snorkelling and diving.

The shallow lagoons coupled with the serenity of Boo Windows provide for stunning photographic opportunities.

Best Suited for Experienced Divers

This dive site is best suited for experienced divers, as the unique underwater formations are perfect for anyone who wants to navigate through the many open spaces, channels, and caves that make up this formation while also experiencing the almost overwhelming amount of marine life.

The Diving

Depending on current, we will normally drop into this dive site on the west side of the large island. As we make our way down we will come straight onto the famous window.

Time for that photo op!

Keeping the reef on our left-hand side we will then dive from the north end of the site south. We follow the sloping reef past a shallow saddle just past the window and keep making our way deeper till we get to around 25 meters.

Expect a school of thousands of Red Tooth Trigger fish at this point, a great site to see. We will continue past a small wall and a nice coral garden on another saddle at 18 meters as we dive with the reef on our left.

Reaching the southern most point of the dive site we reach an underwater seamount at 15 meters. Depending on the current, we will either round the end of the site to start diving the east face of the reef, or double back on the west side. Either way we will continue and start to raise our profile as we explore along the reef slope.

We will aim to be back at the window at 5 meters for our safety stop for one last chance at that photo, or to just enjoy the view of the sunrays penetrating the shallow waters and playing with the light through the archway.

Topography: Slope and Wall.
Max Depth: 30 meters.
