Situated half way between Jef Pele and Wayilbatan Islands in Misool, Raja Ampat, Four Kings is one of the most celebrated dive sites in the region, offering a stunning underwater landscape that attracts divers from around the globe.
The site consists of a series of rocky pinnacles, which rise from the depths to within a few meters of the surface. These pinnacles are surrounded by nutrient-rich waters, making it a prime location for both big fish encounters and macro life sightings.
The site features shallower areas as well, particularly around the pinnacles, which offer a fantastic opportunity for divers to explore the vibrant marine life in varying depth zones.
The topography at Four Kings is defined by steep, rocky outcrops and coral gardens that attract an abundance of marine life. The pinnacles are home to an impressive variety of soft corals, sponges, and sea fans, which provide shelter for a multitude of critters.
Currents here can be moderate to strong here making it suitable for experienced divers, depending on tidal movement, and it’s ideal to dive during incoming or outgoing tides when visibility is at its best.
While the currents can be strong, they usually help bring in nutrient-rich waters that support an abundance of marine life.
The site is particularly popular with divers seeking encounters with large schools of fish, as well as those interested in photographing macro critters.
Visibility generally ranges from 10 to 30 meters (33 to 100 feet), and the site is a favourite for both wide-angle and close-up photography.
Four Kings is a hotspot for schooling fish and apex predators. The dive site is known for large schools of trevally, barracuda, and giant trevally, which are often seen patrolling the area.
White tip reef sharks and black tip reef sharks are frequent visitors, and divers may even spot bumphead parrotfish grazing on the corals or the massive schools of red-tooth triggerfish,. For macro enthusiasts, the site is rich with critters, including pygmy seahorses nestled in the corals, and various species of colourful nudibranchs.
Diving at Four Kings is best during the dry season, from October to April, when the water visibility is optimal, and the conditions are more predictable.
The site can be dived year-round, though currents are strongest during the full moon and new moon phases.
When we go to dive this site we will want to drop into the shallowest of the pinnacles, which sits at about 7 meters at the North East corner of the site. We will drop down the first pinnacle to the reef slope with connects the pinnacles via a ridge and keep the reef on our left hand side.
This ridge drops down to about 15 meters, we will explore this then continue on down to 25 meters and check out some of the impressive sea fans at this point to find some elusive pygmy seahorses.
Making our way to the west end of the site, We will take in the beauty of another one of the pinnacles that peaks at around 16 meters.
We will round off here and head south to another of the more deeper pinnacles, who’s top sits at 20m. Raising our profile now, we head back up to 15 meters to explore the ridge top and the impressive coral garden here, where we often see Bumphead Parrot Fish eating the hard corals.
Finally we keep heading east back to the shallowest of the pinnacles which sits at 7 meters do our safety stop in this part of the site, and enjoy the spectacle of clouds of Red Toothed Trigger Fish a few meters below us by the shallowest pinnacle.
