Overview

Tank Rock is a captivating dive site in Misool, Raja Ampat, eastern most of the small island chains extending from Fiabacet Island. The unique rocky protrusion above the ocean that resembles a tank is what gives this location its name. A thrilling dive experience full of marine biodiversity is produced by this unusual formation.

The Topography

With a maximum depth of 30 metres, the dive offers a variety of slope reefs and eye-catching rocky pinnacles. The three pinnacles to the east of Tank Rock, which are teeming with schools of fish and decorated with multicoloured crustaceans, are the major attraction. A visual feast, the northern side of the ridge displays a variety of bommies that are much more colourful than those on the southern side.

The Topography

Watch for schools of Barracuda and the magnificent Giant Trevally hunting in the azure waters while you’re exploring. The dive is made more exciting by the frequent sightings of grey reef sharks roaming the region. If you’re lucky, you might see an Oceanic Manta Ray soaring across above your head.

With a variety of Snappers and Groupers darting around and also Pygmy Seahorses lurking among the corals and Porcelain Crabs tucked away in cracks, this location is also a macro enthusiast’s paradise. A remarkable diversity of life, including the odd appearance of a turtle, is supported by the colourful coral formations.

The Diving

Dense areas of soft corals await you as you descend, forming a colourful ecosystem that is home to large schools of anthias and damselfish.

In order to explore the walls and slopes, we will begin the dive by descending to a depth of 25 metres while maintaining the reef to our left. We shall continue on our journey to the site’s western most point.

Here we come across the highlight of the dive, the stunning 3 pinnacles rising up from the sea floor. In the deeper seas, you may come across magnificent 2 to 3 m long Giant Groupers that curiously approach divers.

Tank Rock can have moderate to strong currents, therefore it’s best to have a reef hook in case the current gets stronger. For divers who are keen to discover Raja Ampat’s rich underwater habitat, Tank Rock provides an outstanding experience as we make our way through the amazing coral gardens and intriguing pinnacles.
